HEART
Healthcare Emergency Amateur Radio Team
Patrick Tache', KM4ICE
Being new to Amateur radio in 2015, I was looking for a way to connect with other hams as well as serve my community in times of need. I was checking in to various nets trying to get a feel for what was available in my area. I heard the request for volunteers for the Healthcare Emergency Amateur Radio Team and I thought that might be what I was looking for. Being retired with over 30+ years as a Master Firefighter/Medic, I thought my experience and credentials could continue to be put to good use.
I acquired many ICS certificates while in the Fire department which gave me a head start towards joining HEART.
In June of 2015 I contacted Ira Swartz, the team coordinator, to get more information about the program. He was very informative and explained the program over the phone. I was later asked which healthcare facility I would like to volunteer for. I chose Sentara Princess Anne (SPAH) because it was close to my home.
Ira and Paula set up a meeting for me with the volunteer coordinator and Emergency Manager at SPAH. I completed all of the required paperwork and passed the background check as well as the medical evaluation and required courses. I became the HEART representative for SPAH in July 2015 and I have been active with doing monthly radio checks and updates since then.
I have participated in most of the bi-monthly training nets as well as the annual exercises.
Having been a member of the HEART team since June 2015, I have seen the rapid growth of the team and commitment from other hams in the eastern region of Virginia. The HEART team is always looking to improve communications by way of repeater linking, bi-monthly training nets, digital modes and use of any technological advances in ham radio.
HEART is well respected in all of the many healthcare facilities that participate. I am thankful and proud to be a part of the team.
While I hope that there is never a need for us to activate, I am ready to do so if needed.
