HEART
Healthcare Emergency Amateur Radio Team
Jim Silverstorf, N8JES
It all began when I met Paula KG4IIE and Ira KG4IIF at the 2016 Virginia Beach Hamfest. After talking with them both and going over the HEART booklet and application, I decided to give it a try. On 8 September I submitted the HEART application.
I spent the next few days completing FEMA Courses. Fortunately, I had completed some of the FEMA courses with a different organization so I did not need to take all courses listed on the application. I did take a couple of extra courses while I was at it because the courses were interesting and I am eager to learn new things. On 14 September I completed HEART Orientation and Training. I submitted my Sentara Leigh Hospital Volunteer Application 15 September 2016 and completed Sentara Volunteer Orientation. Shortly after that I received an email “Welcome to Team Leigh HEART Amatuer Radio Operator”.
It should be noted that I also volunteer when the Red Cross has a blood drive at Sentara Leigh Hospital. I participate both as a volunteer and as a blood donor.
On 22 September 2016 I participated in my first HEART Training Net from Sentera Leigh Hospital. Since then I have participated in most HEART Training Nets which are held twice a month on Thursday. I also am an alternate Net Control for the monthly HEART Training Nets. I have also participated in several SET’s.
As HEART moved forward using a TNC (WINLINK) and WIRESX, new training and new forms have been developed. Keeping up with it all has been both fun and educational. I now know what a HICS 213 form is and where to find it. Additionally, I have provided assistance to Ira KG4IIF with many radio checks from other healthcare facilities. (I have a complete station at home).
Being a HEART Team member and a Sentara Leigh Hospital Volunteer since September 2016 has been a gratifying experience.
